Editorials

Our September meeting was cancelled because Tropical storm Isabel had other plans. Even though most of us had no power in our own homes a number of our club stalwarts did show up for the meeting. Such hardy folks as Jay Green, Duke & Ann Frazier, Jim Gilley and Stu found their way to the range only to discover the obvious: no power, no meeting.

As a result, most September meeting minute reports were not available from the various shooting disciplines so this newsletter will be brief.

AGC Report

(Jay phoned in the following September AGC meeting report.)

● The Range Safety Orientation Program is still being worked on and should be ready by December.

The new 2004 AGC club events calendar is being finalized, all member clubs are requested to have range request dates in by November 1st. If you would like Stemmers to host a specific event please present your ideas and a possible date for our upcoming October meeting.

● The Fall AGC Indoor Pellet Pistol League begins in October and is open to all club members every Tuesday afternoon at 5pm

in Messick Hall. This represents a good opportunity to sharpen your handgun skills without the expense of  bullets.

The new 2003 version of the AGC By-laws have been completed and passed unanimously by all member clubs.

●The AGC announced that it will host the 2004 Maryland State Junior Smallbore Championship. The match is scheduled for May 29th, 2004.

● Hunter sight-in will be every weekend in October til mid-November at the Benchrest & 100 yd range area. If you or a friend are going deer hunting this year you'd better get your weapons properly sighted before you venture afield.

Legislative Report

Jim Meyer

(410) 833-8310

The Center For Disease Control (CDC) released a study last week that states there is no evidence to prove that gun-control laws are effective in preventing violence. No kidding! There has always been substance to the clichι that guns don't kill people, people do. Correlative to that rule is that criminals who use guns to kill usually possess their guns illegally. Laws prohibiting or regulating gun ownership does not deter these serial lawbreakers.

They will  continue to obtain and use guns to commit violent crimes even if the rest of the population of sitting ducks are disarmed. While the CDC report only cost us taxpayers $400K we don't need any expensive government study to convince us that gun-control laws don't make communities safer. When taking away law-abiding citizens right to defend themselves, it has always been obvious that the only people who become more safe are criminals who mug, rape, carjack and break into our homes.

These same thugs will think twice before they try to victimize someone who may be packing heat. Nevertheless, we are glad a federal government agency is substantiating something we've known all along.

● Chambersburg Fun Match is this Sunday October 19th. O.K., boys & girls! It's that time again: time to smell the cordite and Hoppe's #9. This match is similar to an IPSC match. It involves kneeling, sitting and laying on the ground, and possibly getting wet. You need leather, lots of speed loaders, or mags, and about 200 rds of ammo plus a reliable firearm you are proficient with. It involves drawing from the leather, and safety is paramount. All unclassified shooters will be paired with experienced shooters. We will leave from my house, assemble at 0730 and hit the road by 0745. Please call me at 410-833-8310 this week for a head count and directions to the range. Try to make this one & hopefully we'll be back in time for the club meeting.

The AGC has requested that Stemmers Run help in supply volunteers to assist in running the trap range for a number of upcoming shoots. Stu would like to request that anyone with or without

trap range experience to pitch-in, the more experienced members could get you up speed in no time. Please, lets show the AGC that Stemmers Run can do its part.
