AGC Report

The new 2004 AGC club events calendar will be finalized by November 1st.  Stu indicates that Stemmers will hopefully have an increased number of scheduled events for the upcoming shooting season.

Important Notice -The AGC has voted to delay the introduction of the Photo Range Badges for 2004. It seems that a problem with the computer software and the equipment used to make the badges could not be overcome in time for the December deadline. We will, therefore, retain the metal badges for 2004. The big change, however, will be the method used by the clubs and individuals to purchase them. In the past, the AGC gave Robin a batch of badges to sell directly to club members beginning December of each year. Then after each monthly meeting Robin would forward the proceeds directly to the AGC.

The new procedure just voted in by the AGC would require that each individual pay for his or her badge up front. The club would then forward the money to the AGC, whereupon the AGC would issue the badges to be picked up by members at the next club meeting. Many members hotly discussed this new procedure since it could delay by up to one month your getting a badge. Robin was especially incensed since it reflected on an apparent lack of trust the AGC has in its club treasurers.  As an AGC VP, Del Cockey tried, in vain, to explain that it was a number of other club treasurers who were holding on to the money, some for many months. Holding back on the range fees denies the AGC the use of those funds and the resulting bank interest. Needless to say, we are now stuck with the AGC's need to gain immediate use of our range badge fees.  In addition, this process will also require that each club forward a list of its 2003 badge holders, including addresses, so that it can mail the 2004 badges if necessary.

Monumental Rifle & Pistol Club's Women On Target will sponsor a Firearms Cleaning and Maintenance Program at the Barnes Range House on December 12th. Contact Jay for more information.

● The Rosedale Maryland Friends of the NRA annual fund-raiser & banquet will be held on Thursday November 20th. For more information call Claudette Gadsen at 410-319-4867.

Legislative Report

Jim Meyer

(410) 833-8310

An odd thing is happening to liberal Democrats as we near the 2004 elections: some are now supporting more conservative positions, especially about guns. Last month, Senator Tom Daschle of South Dakota and nine other Democrats backed a Republican bill protecting gun manufacturers, dealers and ammunition makers from liability lawsuits - blocking gun-control activists and trial lawyers suing the firearms industry for any deaths and injuries caused by guns.  Just a few years ago, Democrats would have condemned this bill. But now they consider it an issue they can't avoid. Democrat strategists blame gun-control issues the reason they lost the House in 1994 and cost Al Gore the White House in 2000. "Democrats must wake up to the fact that gun owners prefer candidates who stand up for gun rights, responsible gun laws and vigorous law enforcement," stated Jon Cowan, president of Americans for Gun

Safety. Democrats like Daschle, who represent very rural states with large populations of gun-owners, realize that it could also cost them their jobs. Democratic pollsters have found that voters widely believe they have a constitutional right to own guns, but many - especially gun owners- believe that many Democrat politicians don't necessarily share that belief. Well, they'd better take a very hard, realistic view next November.

Hi Power

●The AGC Hi-power season ended on October 12th for the Stemmers team. Members will be assisting the AGC with Hunter Sight-in on the upcoming weekends on the 100- yard range. Since Maryland hunters pay $5 to get their rifles sighted-in this is a great moneymaker for the AGC. If you'd like to help and receive range badge credits please call Jay.

 ● The National Matches in Camp Perry, Ohio this past summer resulted in John Harrison of the Chesapeake R&P Club placing 3rd overall in the Hi-Power Match. This is probably the first time ever that an AGC member or Marylander has ever placed in the top ten in this national competition.

  ● Dual Stemmers Run and Chesapeake Club member Steve Trent recently qualified for the Hi-Power Distinguished Pin in the CMP E.I.C. (LEG) match at Ft. Meade on August 17. Steve took second place Gold with a 482-12x score.  Congratulations Steve!

The AGC has again requested that Stemmers Run help to supply volunteers to assist in running of the trap range for a number of upcoming shoots. Stu would like to request that anyone with or without

trap range experience to pitch-in, the more experienced members could get you up speed in no time. We need at least 3 volunteers, so lets show the AGC that Stemmers Run can do its part.

Shotgun shooting is still going strong even if the weather is not cooperating. Dedicated trap shooters can find something to do several times a week if they are looking.

New Business:

The AGC 2004 Shooting Schedule is being finalized. If you would like to see more pistol matches, more trap match/picnics, or more Hi-Power matches for next year then now is your chance. Give Stu a call at 410-486-6089 or e-mail and let him know what you'd like to see for next year.

Drawing for Bill Shimp's Hi-Power Reloading Press, dies, case trimmers, scales and countless other goodies were won by Mark Van Winkle. Happy reloading Mark and thanks to long time member and former club president Bill Shimp for his service to the club as well as his generosity.

Editorials:

Runaway Idiots----now Hollywood joins the anti-assault weapons bandwagon.

If you've seen the ads running recently on tv about the new movie "The Runaway Jury" starring Gene Hackman you'd come to expect another exciting and suspenseful film. Well, don't bother! The movie begins with a man and many of his co-workers being gunned down by a former employee. Years later, his wife sues the manufacturer that created the gun that killed her husband. Then the nasty pro-gun group goes into action. The pro-gun group is viewed as a bunch of jack-booted Nazis scheming throughout the film, attempting to kill some people, threatening jurors, stealing,

conspiring and doing every illegal and unethical thing possible. The hatchet job on the freedom to own firearms is a theme throughout the entire film. The viewer is continually bombarded with the ongoing message that the problem of gun violence can only be solved when the gun manufacturers are held legally, morally, and financially responsible. The only juror arguing on behalf of the gun manufacturers and the Second Amendment is a hate-filled former Marine who likes to yell a lot. He, therefore, represents Hollywood's stereotypical view of anyone who dares to support the pro-gun position.   The final verdict: this is a liberal, gun-hating propaganda film at it's worst.  My advice…. save your time, and money!

Our next Club meeting is this Sunday November 16th

● Stemmer's Run Annual     Christmas Holiday Party

December 21, 2003

This is it folks! This is what we've all been waiting for - the world famous Stemmer's Run Christmas Holiday Party. Stu says this year's party will be the best ever. Great food, including pit beef, burgers, dogs and lots of desserts and a variety of door prizes will insure that no one goes away hungry or empty handed. So that everyone has an even wider selection of food, we encourage everyone to bring your favorite covered dish or dessert. If not then a $5 donation will go a long way! So, mark your calendars for December 21st.

5-Point Star: Happy
Birthday

Quote of the Month

We need to teach the next generation of children from day one that they are responsible for their lives. Mankind's greatest gift, also its greatest curse, is that we have free choice. We can make our choices built from love or from fear.
