Editorials The State of the Stemmers Run Rifle & Pistol Club: A letter from our President

To All Club Members,

Now that spring is here and the shooting season is in full swing, I would like to take this opportunity to update everyone on the state of the Stemmers Run Rifle and Pistol Club. As most everyone knows by now, our club is experiencing its biggest drop in membership in over twenty years. Last year we had a total of 128 paid members. The reason for this situation is well known: the unprecedented 300% increase in AGC range badges that now costs us $150 plus the $30 needed for club membership renewal. That's $180 annually, an amount that for many of us represents a significant amount of money. The result has been dramatic, both for the AGC and for our club as well. Today, we have 62 paid members, of which 51 bought the AGC range badges. We also have 6 Life member badge holders. Overall, this represents a membership drop of more than 50%. While this situation looks a bit dismal, lets all try to look on the bright side.

Our club was formed over fifty years ago as a social organization based on the love and respect of firearms ownership, competition, and camaraderie. All of us joined to learn more about a craft that in today's world is considered controversial, but one that we consider very important and necessary in a very dangerous world. Whether its shooting clay birds on the trap range, keeping them in the black on the pistol range or just hitting paper on the hi-power range…all of it represents the real reason we joined Stemmers Run in the first place. So maybe you can't afford the $150 AGC badge. You can still retain your club membership, which entitles you to participate in every shooting event the club holds. Every year we try to hold any number of shooting events that puts you and even your non-member friends on the range. The best example was the Pistol Picnic we just held on May 4th. Other club sanctioned events, such as periodic Trap Shoots and high power rifle events are excellent ways to join in the fun, food and friendship. So, there are alternatives to retaining club membership without the high price tag.

Remember, nearly all of us live in a very liberal, anti-gun state that would like nothing more than to see us fail, both as a club and as individual gun supporters. Since the odds of our success are stacked against us as a club we can only survive if our membership supports its numerous activities. Without you we cannot survive. So please, renew your membership and remain a proud member of the Stemmers Run Rifle & Pistol Club.

Yours in shooting,
Stu Stein
