New Member Chairman

The club is currently in need of a new member orientation chairman. This duty is currently being performed by our president Stu Stein and is one that detracts from his otherwise important duty of running the general meeting. If you want to contribute to the club in a meaningful way this may be your opportunity. We can orient you in what you have to know. In no time you'll be introducing new club members to shooting sports with Stemmers Run. Contact Stu at 410-486-6089 ASAP!

Welcome

June Meeting Attendees:

Billy Adams, John Bindas, J.R. Broderick, James Gilley, Dan Green, Jay Green, Bob Holland, Mel Marshall, Jim Meyer, Robin Meyer, Stu Stein, Steve Trent

Meeting Minutes:

Our June 15, 2003 meeting opened with the traditional, time-honored pledge to Old Glory. Because there were no new members this month, President Stu Stein chaired the meeting.

AGC Report

J. Green

410-435-2528

June AGC Meeting:

 · Volunteers are needed for a variety of range requirements. First, the Sunday Trap Shoot needs people who are familiar with trap operations to help run the show. Contact Jay if you can lend a hand. Second, help is needed for range spruce-up, from painting, filling ditches and especially mowing grass. Because of the ever-present budget crunch, help is always needed. Again, contact Jay for more information.

 · Volunteers are needed for the new member video orientation. Remember, this new system is in place for all new club members and required in order to get a range badge.

 · AGC President Ralph Musella stated that he wants the new photo ID badge proposal voted on by the AGC trustees next month. Initially, this will require an approval of $6-8,000 for the equipment. Because this new system was first tabled by our club last March, we voted then to instruct Jay to vote NO to this potentially very costly means of policing members using OUR ranges at Marriottsville.

·The new AGC by-laws project will be completed by the end of the year.

July AGC Meeting (this report was provided over the phone by Jay on July 7th because he will be unable to attend our next meeting).

· Jay reports that the deed was finally done. The AGC trustees voted and passed by one vote the Photo-ID Range badge. Beginning in January, 2004 all new range badge renewals will be photo ID's. The various colored & numbered  metal badges will now go the way of the Edsel . For those of us who are unaware, this new photo-ID is required to prevent unauthorized people from using the range facilities by borrowing a range badge from anyone crazy enough to loan it to them. This reported unauthorized use has been extremely rare in the past, which is the reason the vote was so close. Incidentally, since Ralph happens to be the Trustee for four (4) associated clubs his four votes sealed the deal. So much for the so-called democratic concept of one-man, one-vote!

Legislative Report

Jim Meyer

(410) 833-8310

·  Several weeks ago our local nemesis, Marylanders Against Handgun Abuse (MAHA) issued a press release announcing that MAHA has adopted a new name: "Ceasefire Maryland". We've just got to keep an eye on this bunch!

· New Guv Bob Ehrlich has been pitching his campaign promise to bring "Project Exile" to combat Maryland's (Baltimore's) high crime to the members of the General Assembly. This program, patterned from a similar one in Virginia, will make it a Federal offense for felons committing a repeat crime with a handgun. Rather than incarcerating them in a local prison, they are sent far, far away from Maryland. This way their local connections are severed. For us, enacting this law will hopefully negate some of the more ridiculous gun laws such as the spent cartridge requirements when purchasing a new handgun.

·Members living in Carroll County should be aware that fund-raisers for Larry Haines will be coming shortly. Larry is very pro-gun and will need your help. Please contact Jim for more information.

· The Spring 2003 AGC Hi-Power Team Matches were recently completed. There were fourteen AGC Teams participating in these highly competitive, 3 positions, 500 aggregate matches. Stemmers Run Hi-Power Team individual member results were as follows:

 Match #1 April 13

   Dave Lloyd…….478 - 13X

   Jay Green …….. 471 - 8X

   Bob Holland …...446 - 4X

   Dan Green……...420

   Stan Scott………386 - 3X

 Match #2 May 25

   Dave Lloyd……..472 - 6X

   Jay Green……….470 - 11X

   Jim Autry……….464 - 4X

   Bob Holland…….434 - 5X

   Dan Green………434 - 4X

· Jay wants everyone to know about an on-line computer petition drive that is underway to convince lawmakers to "civilianize" hundreds of thousands of M-14 military battle rifles so they can be legally sold by the government to the general public as a way to pay for the Iraq war. Much like the old DCM program for M-1 Garands, this one will require the disabling of the full-auto function to semi-auto, and would be sold by the new Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). As many as 300,000 M-14s are scheduled for scrap heap.

Please help by petitioning at:

Juniors

Stuart Stein

410-486-6089

The Junior Program represents an important part of Stemmers Run's programs. The lack of participation in this program will jeopardize the support of the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Again, Stu is appealing to all members with children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews interested in learning the use of safe firearms instruction to join this important program. Remember, these children represent the future of protecting our Second Amendment rights.

·NRA  Regional Pistol Match

was held at the Marriottsville Pistol range from July 4 to 6. Teams from all military branches, as well as the top U.S pistol shooters participated in this three-day event. Jim's predictions were right on the money. The opening ceremonies were very impressive and most of the competitors were pleased with condition of the AGC pistol range. Results of the matches are not known at this time. Jim's photos taken during the match will soon be available for all to view on the Stemmers web site.

New Business:

· Jim Meyers announced that a long time Stemmers Run Club member, Mr. Bill Shimp, 70, has decided to give away much of his accumulated shooting supplies and equipment. Bill has requested that his shotgun and rifle reloading presses, powder, dies and wads be given to a new, or relatively youthful shooter. He wants to give away one press and equipment on July 20th and the other at our September 21st meeting. Bill has been a Life member since 1956 and is our second longest member after Mr. Howard Jones who joined us in 1954. Bill was also Stemmers President from 1968 to 1978.

Quote of the Month: "It might be 50 years before the United States gets to where Britain is today. Passing a law like the assault weapon ban is a symbolic-purely symbolic-move in that direction. Its only real justification is not to reduce crime but to desensitize the public to the regulation of weapons in preparation for their ultimate confiscation."
